Finally the EU bans Retinol to a maximum!
Retinol, while hailed for its effectiveness in addressing various skin concerns, can often be harsh and irritating, especially for those with sensitive skin – now the EU has FINALLY stepped in!
European Regulations and Concerns
European regulations are reshaping the landscape of skincare, particularly concerning retinol and its derivatives. With limitations imposed on retinol concentrations, consumers are increasingly questioning the safety and efficacy of traditional skincare ingredients. The EU has set a maximum concentration of 0.3% for facial products and 0.05% for body products, aiming to mitigate potential health risks associated with excessive retinol exposure.
Why Mudmasky was against using Retinol since the start in 2015
Dermatologist Lloyd Diamond MD, who serves as the the lead R&D at Mudmasky, elaborates on the impending regulations. He notes that the new regulations won’t be enforced until 2025 or 2026, giving brands 18 months to cease production and 36 months for their existing stock to be depleted. Despite this timeline, there’s growing concern among the public regarding the safety of retinol. Dr. Diamond emphasizes that while retinol has significant scientific backing for its effectiveness against various skin issues such as wrinkles, acne, and hyperpigmentation, its misuse can lead to skin irritations. Therefore, he underscores the importance of using a natural alternative like Bakuchiol. “I have been fighting with the EU since 2008 to regulate its usage to ensure safe and effective skincare practices.” says Dr. Diamond in an interview for our blog.
Understanding the Risks and Benefits
Retinol, hailed for its effectiveness against various skin concerns, comes with its share of risks, particularly when used in high concentrations or without professional guidance. While regulations aim to address these concerns, the search for gentler alternatives remains paramount.

In this evolving skincare landscape, Mudmasky stands out for its commitment to gentle yet effective skincare solutions.
